Cacao, Theobroma cacao, literally meaning “Food Of The Gods”, is not only one of the healthiest and delicious superfoods out there, but in many indigenous its celebrated for its spiritual and heart-opening medicinal qualities. Cacao has the highest antioxidant polyphenol content of any food out there, promotes cardio-vascular health, and is high on calcium, iron, and magnesium. This energizing plant is a natural stress reducer, mood lifter, and mirrors the chemistry in our brain that occurs when we fall in love. So don’t worry if you feel the butterflies in your stomach— its just the cacao reciprocating the love, no strings attached.

We want to make sure that the cacao we consume is fair trade, grown with care and ethically sourced! We recommend 100% Cacao, the original non-hybridized form of the plant for best results.

Cacao

Reishi Mushrooms

Fungi might not be the first ingredient that comes to mind when envisioning the perfect cup of hot cacao, but the benefits of reishi mushrooms will leave you dreaming of shrooming out your cacao on a daily basis. These immune-boosting antioxidant mushrooms and Eastern-medicine staple, can help prevent cancer and infection, fight fatigue and depression, promote heart health, and control blood sugar.

We used a tincture, but a powdered version works just as well! The recommended daily dose may range from 25- 100 grams of the mushroom, or 1.5- 9 grams of the tincture.

Sweetener

Raw honey is our favorite, as it works as a carrier to amplify the benefits of the cacao, mushrooms, and spices, but the sweetener of choice is up to you. Some good alternatives to honey are stevia, monk fruit, agave, and coconut sugar. Just make sure you don’t use refined sugars!

Plant- Based Milk

Adding a plant-based milk will give it a creamy and frothy consistency, especially when blending it up. We love coconut milk for its richness, but oat milk and nut milks work great!

Spices

Here’s where it gets fun. Well, funner. Depending on your mood and what your body is craving, you can add the spices of your choice to set the tone to your day. We used cinnamon and cardamom, rich in antioxidants and notorious for their anti-inflammatory and digestion boosting effects, but the possibilities are endless. If you’re feeling spicy, for example, cayenne pepper, apart from giving it a kick, can speed up the effects of the medicine as it promotes absorption. Explore with flavors! Let your creativity flow! Rose, mint, turmeric, vanilla, lavender… the list goes on.
